lyrics

The sun was high and bruising on the fifth of May. My nose could smell the pollo and carne asada that hung in the air at the People's Joy. I could practically taste this lust for life suspended in the bubble of a moment that was about to pop.

There was a cavalcade of Volvos, pyrotechnics galore, people wheeling about on unicycles and Bug Chaser being drug on a float to the bend in the road. At the end of the parade I walked into the blood vein of the festivities, clogged with booths and revelers. Children played in bounce houses where Apop used to be. I guess independence can leave you high and dry.

I watched the mechanical bull, whirling and jerking in robotic fashion, flinging bodies onto the mat below. Not that he knew any better, but it must be hard spending your life pushing people away from you. It is said the bull nodding in agreement, saddle covered in thigh sweat. “What does red even look like?” he asked. I didn’t quite know how to answer that question.
